Handmade With Care
Handmade pens are a rewarding crafts at home project, whether you turn Corian blanks, work with rich hard woods such as rosewood or ebony, or cast vibrant resin hybrids; each material offers its own character and challenge. Corian gives a smooth, durable finish and clean colours, hard woods provide attractive grain and natural weight, while resin allows for dramatic swirls and inclusions — but all require delicate turning, sanding and polishing to avoid chipping or overheating. With patience, the right tools and a careful technique you can create a refined, tactile writing instrument that is both personal and beautifully finished.
Our hand turned pens, From Start to Finish
To make a pen at home from start to finish, begin by deciding on a design and choosing materials — common options are a wooden, resin or acrylic blank plus a stainless-steel or brass pen kit and the necessary tools such as a small drill, pen tube glue (epoxy or CA), a lathe or hand-turning setup, sandpaper (from about 240 to 2000 grit), polishing compounds and safety kit (goggles, dust mask and good ventilation); prepare your workspace with steady lighting and a tidy bench; next, mark and cut the blank to the kit dimensions, drill and glue the brass tube into the blank ensuring it is centred and allowed to cure fully; trim and square the ends, mount the glued blank on a mandrel and turn it to your chosen profile taking light passes and frequently checking diameter for a snug fit with the kit components; sand through progressively finer grits until smooth, then apply your chosen finish — friction polish, thin CA coats or oil finishes all work well — allowing each coat to cure and lightly buffing between layers for depth and protection; once the finish is cured, remove the blank from the mandrel, assemble the pen parts according to the kit instructions, check the mechanism for smooth action and make any small adjustments, finally polish the completed pen with a soft cloth to bring out the colour and shine; throughout the process work patiently, follow safety guidance when handling tools and adhesives, and test-fit components regularly for a satisfying handmade pen you can be proud of.
